A convenient implementation of the overlap between arbitrary Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov vacua for projection

Overlap between Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov(HFB) vacua is very important in the beyond mean-field calculations. However, in the HFB transformation, the U,VU,V matrices are sometimes singular due to the exact emptiness (vi=0v_i=0) or full occupation (ui=0u_i=0) of some single-particle orbits. This singularity may cause some problem in evaluating the overlap between HFB vacua through Pfaffian. We found that this problem can be well avoided by setting those zero occupation numbers to some tiny values (e.g., ui,vi=10−8u_i,v_i=10^{-8}). This treatment does not change the HFB vacuum state because ui2,vi2=10−16u_i^2,v_i^2=10^{-16} are numerically zero relative to 1. Therefore, for arbitrary HFB transformation, we say that the U,VU,V matrices can always be nonsingular. From this standpoint, we present a new convenient Pfaffian formula for the overlap between arbitrary HFB vacua, which is especially suitable for symmetry restoration. Testing calculations have been performed for this new formula. It turns out that our method is reliable and accurate in evaluating the overlap between arbitrary HFB vacua.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. Why are tax incentives increasingly used to promote private R&D?

    Get PDF
Although not new, tax incentives have known major changes over recent years and it is becoming an increasingly important instrument in the policy mix to stimulate private R&D in many countries around the world. The OECD reports three major trends: The implementation of R&D tax incentives schemes by a growing number of OECD and non- OECD countries; A steady substitution of direct funding schemes for tax incentives schemes to stimulate business R&D; The many changes to tax incentives schemes most countries have done to increase the levels of generosity and attractiveness. This paper attempts to explain the motives behind these trends in R&D policy to stimulate private R&D and takes a multi-level approach as the issue involves political, strategic and economic considerations. The reasons behind the growing preference for tax incentives go much beyond any possible advantage these policies might have over direct measures, and are also the consequence of a political change in the EU R&D policy after the Lisbon Strategy and the subsequent actions to stimulate R&D expenditures, a change in the economic rationale of public support of private R&D in face of the insufficiency of market failures to justify that public intervention in a new context characterised by a public determination to increase the amount of business R&D expenditures, and the growing competition between countries for international R&D investment.Tax incentives; Business R&D; R&D policy.

Fantasías freudianas: aspectos centrales y posible aproximación con el concepto de esquemas de Aaron Beck

    Get PDF
This article discusses points about the concept of fantasy of Sigmund Freud, and suggests a dialogue between them and the concept of schemes proposed by Aaron Beck's cognitive therapy theory. This suggestion does not indicate any form of eclecticism, theoretical or practical, and discusses these concepts considering the differences in their assumptions. According to Freudian theory, the fantasy represents a form of subjective reading, organized from the wishes and defense mechanisms, of facts' reality. This is what Freud called psychic reality, which has its basis in childhood and the phylogenetic fantasies. Beck's theory does not make references to the notion of fantasy, however, and considers the role of subjective impressions and interpretations of events, especially those experienced in childhood. Thus, he develops the thesis that the schemes organize cognitive, affective and behavioral processes. The dialogue between these theories has been supported by studies in cognitive science. Why do pulse pressure variations fail to predict the response to fluids in acute respiratory distress syndrome patients ventilated with low tidal volume?

    Get PDF
Respiratory-associated variations in stroke volume and pulse pressure are frequently used to predict the response to fluid administration. However, it has been demonstrated that low tidal volume ventilation may limit their use in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In this issue, a trial investigates the value of pulse pressure variation to predict fluid responsiveness in a large series of patients with ARDS ventilated according to current guidelines

We Missed Our Youth : The Identity Formation of Child Migrants, Refugees, and Jewish Children in France From 1940 to 1942

    Get PDF
From 1940 – 1942, hundreds of Jewish children from Germany, Austria, Russia, and France were hidden from Nazi and Vichy French authorities in children’s homes in France. These homes were administered by the Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants, a Jewish aid organization that assisted children in need during World War II. This study employs a quantitative content analysis of the testimonies of twenty Holocaust survivors who were hidden children in France between 1940 and 1942 to investigate to what extent the experience of outsider status and trauma affected these children’s personal and religious identity formation. The analysis finds that the experience of forced familial separation and trauma had adverse effects on survivors’ formation of a personal identity and affiliation links and had other unexpected consequences in their lives. This thesis integrates scholarship about Vichy France and its persecution of Jews with modern literature about identity, racialization, and immigration in France. Finally, this thesis uses the historical analysis and modern scholarship to provide insight into the experience of contemporary refugee children in France and the world
